The NHS

People in the United Kingdom don’t really have a good grasp of what life would be like without the NHS. They don’t understand the struggle that people in the rest of the world have to deal with. It isn’t as easy as everybody getting their own global sim for health services. I was lucky, of course, I was forewarned and had great travel insurance that covered my medical bills. A friend of mine, however, wasn’t so lucky, broke her wrist in Florida and came home with a bill for five thousand pounds. My other friend can’t travel, because she is too old and can’t get proper travel insurance. Introducing competition into health care is barbaric. There are some things that should not be done at a profit. People should not profit from the health or ill health of others. I realize that we can’t completely reverse the route that drug companies have gone down, making millions from disease and misfortune. Think about it though? What if our universities became ’the'place for the development of the best drugs and technology? If University of Liverpool developed a cure for cancer? Not only would it save the world, and possibly some money for the NHS, but it could completely shift the paradigm. At the moment there is some completely muddled thinking about the role that university education plays in our national life. It is simply insane to think that a good eduction only benefits the student and has no value for the greater society.
